Meet The Town Manager
Gerald Spates (known to everyone as Gerry) was born in San Francisco, California, and later relocated to Washington D.C. with his parents. He was drafted in June 1967 shortly after graduating high school.
In January of 1968, Spates was selected to attend Engineer Officer Candidate School. He graduated as a 2nd lieutenant combat engineer and served in Vietnam with the Army Corps of Engineers as an engineer advisor. After his tour of duty, he returned to the States and was transferred to Fort Pickett, Virginia, as an assistant post engineer until his discharge as a captain in 1973. Spates received multiple awards in recognition of his exemplary service to his country, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Star.
Spates began his civilian professional career as an engineer consultant at the Piedmont Planning Commission, currently known as the Commonwealth Regional Council (CRC). He came to Farmville as assistant town manager in 1975 and has served Farmville as town manager for the past 38 years. Mr. Spates has the distinction of being one of the longest serving town managers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The duties of the town manager include carrying out the policies and ordinances of council, advising council on affairs of the town, addressing citizen concerns and supervising all departments. He also manages and maintains Westview Cemetery and handles rentals and use of all town-owned properties.
In addition to these duties, Spates has led and managed numerous community and economic development projects including roads, bridges, industrial parks, a water treatment plant, a wastewater treatment plant, the airport, public transportation, parks, library, extension of water and sewer lines, and many, many other projects that have made and continue to make Farmville an amazing place to live and work.
Gerry also serves on the board of the Farmville Downtown Partnership, is a member of the Farmville Lion’s club and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Farmville United Methodist Church.
He enjoys the outdoors, hunting and fishing and has been married for 36 years to his wife Linda. They have two daughters, Julie and Courtney, and three (3) grandsons.
