Area Parks And Recreation Town of Farmville Recreation Department The Town of Farmville has outstanding recreational opportunities available for use by all outdoor enthusiasts. Our trails, parks and recreational facilities are easily accessible and within walking distance of most Town neighborhoods. Canoeing, fishing, hiking, boating, and sports – we have in all right here in Farmville! Wilck’s Lake Park is a 175 acre natural area located on West Third Street. A 35 acre lake is the centerpiece of this picturesque recreational area. Amenities include a children’s play area, skateboard park, the Sarah Terry Trail, soccer fields, and a private island which can be reserved to host parties, weddings, and other social events.
Use of the Skateboard Park does require a free membership card. The Town of Farmville skate park is located on West Third Street next to Wilcks Lake Park. To reserve the island at Wilck’s Lake, contact Kim Thompson at (434) 392-8465. Grove Street Park is a small community park located at Grove and Buffalo Streets. A children’s play area and picnic tables are available for your enjoyment.
Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Appomattox River on North Main Street. It is the home for the Town’s First Friday concerts from May through October of each year. Haynes Street Park is a recreational area at the end of South Virginia Street. Basketball courts are available for use, and there is a large open area that can be used for football, soccer, or whatever outdoor activity you may enjoy. Public basketball courts are also located on Andrews Drive, adjacent to the Parkview Gardens Apartment complex. The Prince Edward/Farmville Youth Association Field of Dreams, located on West Third Street, is a sports complex featuring five lighted playing fields. The PEFYA provides sports programs to over 700 area youngsters including spring and fall soccer, girls' softball, baseball and basketball. Virginia State Parks: High Bridge Trail State Park is the newest addition to the Virginia State Park System and the Town of Farmville! Three and a half miles of the trail travel through the heart of Farmville, and it is open for non-motorized activities. Upon completion, the trail encompass 33.5 miles for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Twin Lakes State Park is located in the Green Bay area of Prince Edward County. Centrally located, it hosts a variety of activities. Swimming, camping, fishing, canoeing and hiking are popular activities at the park. There are also cabins and campsites available for rental. Bear Creek Lake State Park, surrounded by the 16,000 acre Cumberland State Forest, provides numerous activities for the outdoor lover in you. Camping, hiking, swimming, playgrounds, picnicking, and an archery range are just a few of the things you can enjoy during your visit. Camping and cabins are available for rental for your overnight stay. Holiday Lake State Park, located in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, is a fisherman’s dream. Largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie and bluegill are abundant in the 150-acre lake within the park. The nearby state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries delayed-harvest trout stream allows anglers to fish for brown and rainbow trout. There are also excellent trails open to hikers, bikers and equestrians. James River State Park is one of the newest state parks in our area. Canoeing, kayaking and tubing are popular river activities, and there are nearly 20 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. BOATING AND FISHING Wilck’s Lake, in the Town of Farmville, offers a 35 acre lake for fishing and boating. A Virginia fishing license and Town fishing permit are required to fish in the lake. Sandy River Reservoir is a 740 acre lake in Prince Edward County that is stocked and managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. There is a public ramp with courtesy pier. The lake supports excellent fisheries for largemouth bass, black crappie, redear sunfish, and an ever-improving channel catfish fishery. Other species to note include bluegill and chain pickerel. Briery Creek Lake is an 845-acre lake that is owned by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and is within the Briery Creek Wildlife Management Area in Prince Edward County. Located approximately seven miles south of Farmville, the lake is populated with Florida strain largemouth bass, northern strain largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish (also known as shellcrackers), channel catfish, and crappie. Farmville Municipal Golf Course is a nine hole municipal golf course owned and operated by the Town of Farmville. It is an excellent course featuring large, well-conditioned greens and offers a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. It is located approximately 10 minutes north of the Town of Farmville, adjacent to the Farmville Regional Airport, at 36 Wedgewood Drive. There is a clubhouse with banquet facilities available for rental. The junior olympic size swimming pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The course is known for its challenging layout and manicured greens. The 6,000 yard layout plays to a par 69 for men and 72 for women and is equipped with two large practice greens, practice sand traps, club house, driving range and pro shop. For tee times, call (434) 392-2613. The Manor Resort Golf Club is located approximately 5 miles south of Farmville in Prince Edward County. The course, which was opened in 2006, was chosen as one of the “Best New Golf Courses of 2007” by Golf Digest Magazine.
